When the time comes to leave the supportive hospital environment, many families experience a sense of isolation. Making Headway Foundation offers a variety of support groups in
New York City free-of-charge. The groups, which are conducted by licensed psychologists, help families sort through and manage the complex feelings and issues that invariably arise. They provide a sense of community and an opportunity to be heard and understood by others living through a similar experience.
Because the diagnosis of a brain tumor and its treatment have different impacts on patients, siblings and parents, Making Headway offers three separate support groups. All groups are professionally led and make use of age-appropriate strategies.
The sibling group uses art, play and discussion to address a wide range of feelings including neglect, guilt, fear and resentment.
The parent group discusses and devises strategies for understanding and navigating the medical system and dealing with behavioral and disciplinary concerns, school difficulties, sleeping problems, marital stress, social isolation, resentment and fear of recurrence.
The “twenty-something” group provides an opportunity for brain and spinal cord tumor survivors to help each other understand and address some of the unique challenges they face.
