Making Headway Foundation focuses not only on the care and comfort of children with brain and spinal cord tumors, but on finding a cure. In a field that receives limited support, Making Headway funds medical research, sponsors symposia for health professionals and funds training fellowships in the challenging field of pediatric neuro-oncology.

Grants. Although brain and spinal cord tumors are the second most common form of childhood cancer, the bulk of money for research is directed at adult brain tumors. The situation has worsened in recent years, as the budget for the National Institutes of Health has been steadily reduced. Recently, Making Headway committed $1,220,000 for NYU Langone Medical Center to fund research projects focusing on finding the cause of, and innovative cures for, pediatric brain tumors. This includes a $1,000,000 commitment to fund a new Neuro-Oncology Laboratory there.

Bio Repository Center at NYULMC. Making Headway funds a program for human brain tissue banking at the New York University School of Medicine. The Bio Repository Center obtains and archives tissue samples from adult and pediatric brain tumor patients at the NYU Langone Medical Center (NYULMC). The samples are made available for cancer research at NYULMC and other institutions at nominal or no cost.
